Wandile Mbambeni is a singer/songwriter originally from the Eastern Cape, currently based in Cape Town.
Wandile was born the youngest of three brothers in the rural former Transkei. He was formerly known as the Border Bulldogs scrumhalf and as the only musically minded individual in his family, he continued to embrace his rugby skills - until the age of 17, when his aunt bought him his first guitar. A few years later at the end of 2013, Wandile played his first gig and the rest is history; as the 21-year old is now moving to a new rhythm launching his career as a singer/songwriter.
Wandile is typically recognized for his smooth afro-soul sound when gracing the stage alone. His sound carries a special kind of magic as he tells stories with his music, stories that his audience can personally relate to, stories full of soul and written by Wandile himself. Story telling, although, can be somewhat monotonous, but Wandile always mixes it up with occasional rapping, beat boxing, electronic collaborations and easy conversions between English and his native tongue. He enjoys playing around with covers of artists who have inspired him to perform the way he does; notably the story telling of Passenger, the creativity of Drake, the singing combined with rapping from Ed Sheeran and the honesty and integrity of Kendrick Lamar’s and J. Cole’s lyrics.
Wandile just launched his new album ‘Good Intentions’ at the Waiting Room, motivated by the notion ‘never to hurt anyone’. The album includes a collaboration with a vivid writer; Eyleen Frost on “Leave the Fairytales & F#*k the Fairytales”. Trust, you will not be disappointed – expect to be captivated with the honesty and brilliance of these tracks.
Having shared a stage with Matthew Mole, Michael Lowman, Howie Combrink, Shortstraw, Prime Circle, Tailor, Majozi, Red Tape Riot and Veranda Panda to name a few, this up and coming artist translates easily on a global scale. Wandile recently played for sold out shows in Germany; an experience that he describes as nothing short of amazing. His tour landed him full house shows in Mainz, Stuttgart, Bad Säckingen, Langenargen and was an inspiring game-changer when his soon to be infamous name went to print in a German Newspaper. Testament to his success abroad, Wandile has secured another tour to Germany for July 2016, anticipating the launch of his new album.
This young, authentic singer/songwriter is someone to be followed – the sky is the limit, and Wandile Mbambeni Music is climbing the ladder and dreaming big. Hey, Trevor Noah (Wandile’s current role model) just landed the Daily Show – who knows where Wandile’s music might take him. Watch this space.
